Series 3 Stalls Out When Stopping!
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:19:05 AM »
Hello!  For the last few months, my Series seems to stall out if I either just come to a stop or if I need to brake abruptly. If I slow down gradually, using the gears, it will stay running.
I don't know where to start looking for the cause or fix! When its running, its runninng fine. It just stalls as I am stopping. Like the idle dips too low for a second. What is the issue here??   Anyone?

You probably have already done all of this but:
1. Clean out the sediment bowl and the screen on the fuel pump
2. Replace the inline fuel filter if you have one. If you don't put one in.
3. Check the screen on the bottom of the fuel draw tube in the tank. Make sure it is clear.
4. If possible blow out all of your fuel lines
What kind of carb do you have? If it's a Weber, carefully take the top off it and see if the bowl has crap around the jets in the bottom of the bowl at the back. If it does clean it out.
5. If all else fails, remove the air cleaner elbow, rev it up and put your hand over the air intake of the carb. Do not let it stall. See if you can suck the accumulated crap out of the jets.
6. If it still doesn't run right, take it to Matt.
I just went thru the same thing but fixed it myself before step #6

It doesn't coincide with stepping on the brake pedal does it?

NO Chris.   I did find a disconnected vacuum line and reconnected that. Readjusted the idle, cleaned the carb and choke. Packed the wife into the Series and carted her around for about an hour. No stalling, wheezing, or trembling. I did hear a metallic rattling, pulled over and discovered that my exhaust  was loose on the manifold. Tightened that up and was nice and quiet again!   Thanks for everyones input.

Glad to see it's sorted!  Well done.

You might want to baseline it now that it's running well again.  On old carburated engines the vacuum gauge is your best friend!  On my old Toy FJ60 I hooked one up on a pillar pod and never looked back.  I always knew the engines state of tune.  It even helped me with my gas mileage by telling me what I was doing - namely putting my foot down!  Anyway, if you want to read a great writeup on the subject -

Also, check out the rest of the Tech Section.  Loads of good info.
