my rover has been decapitated!!
« on: July 23, 2009, 07:54:42 PM »
Cruising down the street one day my rover splutters stalls out and coasts to the side of the road. I open the hood and a gust of heat plumes out of the hood. My upper and lower radiator hoses looked like they were about to burst....

Further inspection revealed major oil in the coolant (however no coolant in the oil). A chat  with a local rover guy who's been around the block guided me to the diagnosis of a head gasket.

Heres some pics of the disassembly that took place today before the monsoon. I should be picking up the head from the machinist tomorow after he checks for warps and cracks.

As you can see there are not any blown out gaps between the holes in the gasket... however there are dark black patches between some of the rings indicating the point of failure.

ok i picked up the head from the machinist... he found no warps or cracks and planed it for me to!:D I have the head sitting on the block right now atop the new gasket with everything finger tight. Armed with a haynes manual providing the tightening sequence and the torque settings it should be put together and running by tomorow (weather permitting)

So i got the truck running for the first time in a month last night and man did it sound good! Only catch was after idling for about 2 minutes it developed a horrid ticking sound, so I began to re-tighten all the manifold bolts and checked to make sure it was firing on all cylinders. It was still ticking after that. That only meant one thing: tappets. I popped off the valve cover and had them all re-adjusted within 20 minutes and it runs great now!!

I'm pretty sure the kids will not be riding with us as because it is too much of an insurance liability. So don't let the seat belt issue stop you! although you should probably fit some eventually...
