thinkin of converting to disc brakes
« on: August 16, 2009, 11:12:40 AM »
I was thinking of doing some sort of disc brake conversion on my 65 ex mod 109 this winter. just dont feel safe drivin around the cape in the summer with all the tourist traffic. I have looked at some of the kits they seem pretty straight forward just more than my budget. My question is if there is some swap of axles that could be done for less with out too much custom fabing. was also thinking about tranny swap at same time would like to have full syncro.( yes I know how to double clutch but in panic mode some times forget) oh yea it rhd if that matters. any thought , suggestions or parts more be great  thanks phil

I don't know how recent the info is but check out:

The 2 suppliers with good links mentioned in the web page above are:

http://www.zeus.uk.com/land-rover.php

and

http://www.heystee-automotive.com/  ($1811 US dollars for the kit including shipping!)

A cheap swap for you would be to get the front axle from a Toyota FJ40 land cruiser. The last years of them had discs standard, and they are a common swap into series vehicles as the overall width is within an inch of the stock axle. Much stronger too. Since you have a 109", you already have a strong rear axle. So you should be fine there.
