last week ethan, adam (another CT kid with a disco), and myself, got the it up on blocks and began to tear apart ethans RRC. We realised it was going to be an awful lot of work to switch the entire axle and have to deal with all the tie rods and alignment issue. We opted to pull out the shafts and CV's and swap those instead. This idea came to a screeching halt when we saw the massive nut holding the rotor on. I recognized this nut from my series and its wheel bearings, but the only problem was my tool was with my rover 4 towns away at another garage. So there the truck sat in his garage with the front wheels off to be neglected until today.
I tore apart both sides of both axles, complelty stripped both casings of there shafts, cv's, rotors, wheel bearings etcs in about 90 minutes. (that hub nut socket is handy)
It was a blown CV joint (short side..passenger side). When i pulled apart it upart the end of the CV dropped to the ground when i pulled the spindle out and i was greeted by 6 metal balls sitting in the bottom of the swivel ball. Inspecting the other shaft and CV, it was not far behind (mayonaise in the wheel bearings, and rusty pitted balls in the drivers side CV)
The new to us 96 disco axle brought us great fortune, for when i stripped it to my suprise it had both 24 spline inner's and outers!!!!!! When Ethan came home i told him the good news (this was really good news because he got that entire axle for free) however this meant we now had to pull both diffs and exchange them.
Armed with rtv, 90wt, brake cleaner, paper towels, and grease we swapped diffs and put the new 24 spline shafts in!
Not only did this effort fix a broken part, but it also upgraded it!!!
