bad, bad news.... but will have a positive out come
« on: August 09, 2009, 07:41:48 PM »
it all started when my series III 88 was leaking massive amounts of oil. I.e. i filled it up on thursday with fresh 90wt and it was dry that tuesday, yea LOTS of oil. Figuring i should get it sorted before offroad4kids i did a quick inspection of the entire transmission and lost some stomach lining after what i saw.... about a 4 inch crack in the casing. So leaving it parked in the road for a couple days before i came up with a plan and a means to execute it, i checked the crack again, yea it was still there ONLY BIGGER.
My frame geometry is slightly off because of my slipshod measurements for the passenger frame horn and the rear cross member (w/ 18" extensions). This is also why my truck has been sitting funny (high front end, low rear end) but i could drive it with that problem. The stress caused by the faulty geometry split my transmission casing right next to the transfer case.
After talking with my dad and another rover friend they gave me the opinion on a new frame and a rebuilt transmisson. I thought a transmission rebuild was a big job, but now i get to put a newly rebuilt transmission onto a new galvinised frame. So on the positive side when I'm done i will have a series III 88 on a galvy frame, newly rebuilt transmission, and while I'm at it i might as well have the engine done too. The brakes and clutch were both done within the last two years so I wont have to re-do everything, but a good deal of it.
Anyway the transmission rebuild will commence this week and the frame-over will kick off when i decide where to buy a frame from. So no my truck will sadly not make it to offroad4kids (gonna bolt the swampers on the white 109 and drive up), but I'm aiming to have it done for winter romp.

notice in this picture how low the back end is compared to the front end:

X2. I'm sorry to hear about the troubles, but happy to see that you're just trucking ahead to a positive conclusion. Good luck with the rebuild, and the frame swap.

Ok between school and football i've been pretty busy but slowly still churning away at my transmission rebuild. I reckon I'm half way through this stage, as the tranny and t-case are fully dissasemmbeld and cleaned up. I'll be placing a call to RN later this week for new seals, bearings, and some hylomar but i'd figure i'd post up the links to the photos of my work thus far:
Here's the bellhousing all cleaned up awaiting new bearing:http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3227418&l=32917bc5d9&id=646291885
Cleaned up T-case and im holding onto the detent ball for the high/low shifter fork: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3227417&l=5ad960ac31&id=646291885
And the other side of the T-case where the e-brake once was: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3227415&l=6106fb8698&id=646291885

So thus far i can conclude that my original goal of having this truck make it up to winter romp on a new frame is impossible at this rate. but this thing should be done by the summer time. And who woulda guessed pulling apart a t'case and tranny is this much fun? I wonder if putting it back together will be as enjoyable. I made sure to label everything so we'll see.

Transmission is rebuilt and reassembled! Complete with enlarged breathers i fabbed up out of brake fittings. The blue stuff at the seams is hylomar, recommended by Les Parker of RN, and by far the best RTV i have used. Still waiting on a custom shim for the high speed gear in the transfer case before i reassemble that.

A couple  months ago a craigslist as popped up for a sIIa, incomplete project, being parted out. I walked away with many parts as did DrainRovers2 and CliftonRover. Among the parts I acquired was a rolling chassis complete with rebuilt axles, all new brake hard ware, brand new BFG a/t's, and parabolics. Because it is not galvanized, you should all buy stock in waxoyl before i call RN lol.

Sorry Don, I threw some out a month or so ago.  The truck looks good, I wish mine was finished.  I broke my dads larger farmall in half just before thanksgiving and it has held up the work on the defender.
