Battery Replacement
« on: December 21, 2009, 10:45:26 AM »
Thought I would pass on some battery info as my battery was starting to fail - even with being put a charger regularly.  Then we had a cold snap recently and it simply gave up the ghost.  It was a Optima Red 34/78 and had lasted for about 5 or 6 years, which isn't too bad.  I went about looking for a replacement and the ideal would have been an Odyssey.

Everything I have ever heard about them had been very good.  A little pricey - but supposedly a rock solid battery and better than the Optima.  The problem is finding a retailer locally who stocked what I wanted.

I started researching for alternatives and, funny enough, wound up going to Sears of all places!  Sears now sell an AGM technology battery with their Platinum line.  Price is about the same as Optima, but the warranty is 48 month FOC replacement / 100 month pro-rated replacement.  Consumer Reports rates the batter better than the Optima across the board.  In a nutshell, it's a battery worth looking at.

I use Optima's in my trucks and Odyssey's in my boats. Had great success and luck with both. Even after the engine fire in Ton ka over the summer when I tore my winch off; and two fire extinguishers worth blown into the engine bay; my Optimas were fine and he fired right up.
I am a dealer for both of them, if anyone ever needs them; but I'm sure the shipping from FL. to N.E. would off balance any savings.
