no start

So I finished prepping the RRC today changed front diff fluid topped off the hubs transfer case etc....

When I went to start it before I started she clicked like she was dead than cranked over no issue.  I started her up after I was done and no issue.  Ran to sam's club to fuel up for the adventure tomorrow $3.92 a gal by the way.  She wouldn't start at all, just the click.  So I jump out and look hmmm positive cable is nasty clean it up reattach still no start...  Break out the voltmeter hmmm 12.4 volts hmmmm wonder if I have a shorted plate in the bat.  hook jumper cables to the bat then to voltmeter so I can see it as I turn the key 12.25 under load....  Can't test amps so I use the jumper cables to hook to a nice guy in a ford ranger and she clicks than cranks over like it's no problem.  I drive immediately home of course instead of picking up ribs for dinner as I had planned.

I cleaned the terminals properly and reattached still nothing.  I pull the bat and head to pep toys and have it tested.....  It's all good.  So now I've either got a bad bat cable bad ground or bad starter.  Looks like I'm working late tonight so I'll be ready for tomorrow.....  Unless it's the starter in which case I'm probably screwed I'm not sure I can fight two of them off in one night and one back on.....

ok so I crawl under the truck to check the connections at the starter and find this laying across the solenoid....  Anybody know wtf it is and where it belongs?  I think it's just a heat shield.  So I tried the truck starts right up....

Shut it off wait 5 min start again fires right up.

Wait 10 min fires right up...

shut it down abs pump keeps running and sounds funny....  go to pull the relay it shuts down....

Try to start truck no crank

Try again no crank
Try again no crank

Fires right up wtf?

So it's intermintent and I think the abs was a fluke lol I don't think it's the starter, it's a few years old and cranks like a champ when it's going.  I'm thinking the bat cable is old and dying.  I'm going to pull it now measure it and see what the odds of a generic replacement fitting the rover are.  unless anyone has a good idea or has experienced this one before....

Actually I'm going to go get some taco bell than screw with this I'm hungry damnit lol

A decent car parts place should have the cables pre-sized on the shelf and if not they should be able to make one for you. That is, if they are still open right now. Good luck.

well I checked out the battery cable and it looked a bit old and rough so I went ahead and replaced it $8.00 at pep toys.

I just finished putting it in and it's still not cranking.  I used the remote start to attempt to start it while I layed underneath and watched nothing but an audible metallic thunk when it tried to engage.

So my thought is a dead ass starter....

um I had this issue with Wayne where it took him forever to start and sometimes he did and sometimes he didn't and it was my coil so I figured I'd throw it out there. I really suck at this kinda thing, I'm way better at getting the right parts after someone diagnoses it haha. Maybe I should stick with that. :D

Tom, I'm on my way to the freezer right now to grab the vodka that's been chilling for 3 hours... strawberry or raspberry......I have like five steps to decide.....

if not the starter could be that electric start your have!!! i have seen nothing but trouble with those in my shop, always locking doors, or having to hit some kind of switch to start it when in the car........i know in my lawn mower however, that every once in awhile i would have to wd 40 the sprocket for the starter because it would stick and not want to spin out and catch the other gear...but it does more then anything sound like the starter

I'm going to try to pull the one off of the parts rover tonight.  I'll try and switch them out first thing in the morning.  I'll hopefully be there just late.

Ben had the remote start for years with no issues.
