Diff housing
« on: July 12, 2008, 12:21:24 PM »
So I spent some time cleaning up under there today and it's worse and better than I thought.

The better is the housing itself is not cracked just gouged up pretty good, but otherwise fine.

The split in the weld to the factory cover that I thought was a inch or two is closer to 5-6 inches.  It's a nice hairline crack running the center of the weld across the bottom.  It was worse than I thought since I wire brushed it to get the paint etc off so I could work on it and found that it had cracked previously and someone had jb liquid welded it closed to stop the leaking apparently held for 7 years though lol.

So my thoughts are just deadline the truck until I can get the new front end rebuild and sewer capped.  So probably december, or drain the diff and clean it out smear it with jb weld on the inside, and outside and reassemble.  Pray it holds and doesn't take anymore serious hits in the mean time.

Thoughts?

I have a complete front axle out of a disco I just need to go through and reseal it and swap the whole assembly's out along with the brake rotors calipers etc

I would think those would work though lol

Follow up post:

Today I got the JB stick weld on there,  letting it cure till around 8pm then I'll be filling the diff with gear oil and seeing what happens.

While I was under there I went ahead and drained the hubs and refilled with fresh.  I also drained and refilled the transfer case.  I'm debating on a drain and fill on the tranny as well but I don't feel like going to pep toys to buy fluid so I'll probably hold off on that as well.

I'm going to sacrafice a virgin now in hopes that the Rover gods will allow the leak to be sealed...

I bet so far she seems to be holding her bladder. :D

I got the transfer case serviced as well so that's a good thing.
