ubuntu linux os

Taking Chris's advice instead of going hackintosh, I went with the ubuntu linux operating system.  I had been messing with it a little but this last week I have really been playing with it and I have to say it's so much better than windows xp once you start learning how to use it.

I also found a set up that made it look just like the interface on a mac so that made me really happy.

It has all the features of windows except for video games, comes with a complete office suite and your usual solitare lol.  It also comes with a program just like photoshop, good music programs, and video editing software.  The best part is it's completely free.

I really like the instant messenger program on it as well you can log in to multiple yahoo, aol, msn etc accounts all at the same time and get messages on anyone of them.  It also alerts you to email just like your normal messenger program does as well.

All in all it has some quirks that have to be worked with, but it's a great alternative to windows.  For those that don't use video games you'd probably never miss windows one bit.

oh and did I mention it takes about 25% of the time to load of windows :D

Ubuntu is actually slower to load than Vista/XP (assuming you haven't crapped up your system).

That being said I love linux and use it most of the time. Pidgin is great too.

There's nothing better than Compiz Fusion and spinning that cube around... Most of the programs (open office, pidgin, gimp) are available on windows as well if you want to be able to switch between easily.

The other thing to try is Wine. It's a windows emulator. You can install outlook, photoshop, any programs you need windows for and run them right inside linux.

Best thing is the Synaptic touch pad drivers allow you to enable two finger scrolling just like on a mac :)

Are you on KDE or Gnome? Personally I like Gnome on Ubuntu and KDE on OpenSUSE (they just switched to KDE 4 which is pretty nice, abeit a bit buggy at the moment).

oh and by the way... the proper way to refer to it is GNU/Linux. ;)

Maybe a brand new install with no messenger programs anti-virus etc.  As soon as you add a few items though that thing gets slow.  Especially on the underpowered old boxes I have lol.

I've been kicking around trying that compiz fusion out.  I saw the pics of that and it looked freaking sweet.  I have wine installed but I haven't tried it yet.  The only windows program I really want is itunes.

I'm on Gnome as far as I know lol.

I'm really happy with it so far, it's not to bad for a half computer literate guy like myself to figure out.  I think that is a plus.

On that note the forums for the software are fantastic.  There is great user support on there.  It has helped me solve every problem I have ran into.

Russ it's a alternative to using windows for your operating system on the computer.  It's a completely free os and it seems great so far.

Chris when you did the cube did you have any issues with it not letting you set it to four desktops, mine automatically is changing back to 1 and it's starting to piss me off lol.  The other problem I'm having is with the icons and splash screens it won't let me add them to the files it says I don't have permission what am I missing?

Ah typical bad security habit windows user issue :) Just like any other OS in the world, your user account doesn't have administrative rights all the time as that's a serious security issue. You need to open nautilus (or whatever file browser you're using) as root. You can do this by opening a terminal and typing "sudo nautilus" or whatever the command is for your file browser.

What window decorator where you using? If Emerald then you might have to just restart it or apply a new theme.

As for the only 1 desktop, I don't know...

well I fixed the top by undoing what I had done with adding the files to splash and icons.

It does do a flip now like its a cube but it doesn't look like the pics. i.e a cube floating on desktop so it's not quite right yet...

Well, I figured it was an OS thing, it's just the rest of the babble. I have had a Mac for 20 years and I never have any issues. Just a simple restart every month or so after leaving it on all the time. My PC at work can't go two days straight without something stupid happening to it. That is the extent of my computer knowledge. :D

Mine is a ibm but it looks a lot like a make on the screen now :D

I really like mac computers just can't justify the price.

I started messing with pidgin the other night and that is a great program.  I like how I can put in multiple instant messenger accounts and it will monitor all of them for messages and email.
