04 Disco... switch from 18 to 16 wheels
« on: August 19, 2008, 12:40:57 AM »
Bought my first LR (04 SE with 18" wheels) last year, and am coming up on needing new tires. I'd like to go with 16" wheels but have a fairly limited budget. Checking tirerack and just picking something that seems like a reasonable option, the diff between the 18 and 16 on General Grabber AT2's is 60 bucks a tire. (This is my daily driver and I'm not doing anything extreme.)

So, I guess there are a few options:

1) Find someone (pretty local) who wants to trade their 16s for my 18s (and assuming tires are a wash, I wouldn't call mine worth anything).
2) Find five 16" wheels for something not too much more than $60 each. (Assuming I may not be able to sell my 18s for too much, and not knowing how soon.)

and maybe some other options...

anyone have any thoughts/ideas/proposals?

Thanks.

Go on eBay or LRo and find wheels pretty cheap. Usually 75-100 per wheel in very good condition. Around 50 apiece in good condition. Then roll a 245/75/16 if you want to keep stock ride height without rubbing. Will still look okay with a 1.5 to 2 inch lift later. And then when you need tires again, after the lift, go with 265/75 (32") and you're done for light to medium off-roading.

Daniel, Does the wheel bolt pattern on the 18's match the 16's?
If so I have a set of 4-16" I would be interested in talking to you about a trade of some sort.

Disco I, RRC, and Defender share the same bolt pattern as Series. But have different backspacing.

Disco II and P38a share bolt pattern, and back spacing, and are specific.

RRIII has same bolt appern as DII, P38; but with another difference in backspacing. And a difference in hubcentric/bolt centric mounting. But there are spacers widely available to mount RRIII wheels onto P38 and DII.

A friend down the street has 16" rims on his Disco II. I'll ask him if he's interested in a trade. I know he's interested in 18" rims. Any photos?

Thanks Chris! I'll get some quickly.

Pictures of my wheels.

All in good shape; left rear has one small scrape, but nothing serious.

sounds interesting... what size? My Disco is completely stock so I may have clearance issues if the tires are too big. Can you send pics?

Thanks.

What are the tires and size of the 18s?  I need new tires for the LR3.

Go on to discoweb.org, and you'll find a bunch of people selling wheels, ranging from 15" to 16".  Shipping is the only tough part, but you may find a deal.
