SIIA 88" on SIII 109" axles; SOA conversion.
« on: September 06, 2008, 11:33:00 AM »
I am going to use this thread to document the conversion on my SIIA hybrid.

The starting point is a 1968 SIIA chassis. With standard  88" axles. I am removing these, and am going to install 109" SIII axles, going Spring Over Axle configuration.

I will update and edit this thread as I document all relevant information, as a log of the build, and in case any future SWB owners want to try it also.

Follow up post:

The truck is sitting on a level concrete driveway, on a set of new 215/85/16 tires, on matched rims, and matched air pressure. All angles have been calculated to include angle of driveway, so are accurate to frame itself.

The starting measurements are as follows:

Frame, measured from the top flat surface;

Rear axle, measured over centerline; +1 degree, both sides.
Mid-Line, measured over transfer case crossmember; 0 degrees, both sides.
Front axle, measured over centerline; -1 degrees, both sides.

Rear axle;

Clearance to bottom most point of diff; 9 1/2 inches.
Clearance to bottom of spring hangers; 9 1/2 inches, both sides.

Angle of axle, taken off upper spring perch, between U bolts; -1 degree both sides.

Angle of pinion flange; +1 degree.

Front axle;

Clearance to bottom most point of diff; 9 1/2 inches.
Clearance to bottom of spring hangers; 9 3/4 inches, both sides.

Angle of axle, taken off upper spring perch, between U bolts; +12 degrees both sides.

Angle of pinion flange; +3 degrees.

Distance (length) of diff third member, from pinion flange to centerline of axle, both diffs; 10 1/2 inches.

1994 LR RRC LWB. EAS conversion w/ +2" springs.

Went well. First weekend is over. Got the 1 ton Salisbury, and front 24 spline axle out of the 109" 3 door.
Swapped in the bare 88" Rover axle housings from the IIa, to keep it a roller, and send it to it's new home, in Washington State. The new owner is going to rebody a RRC LWB with it, and make a hybrid.
The IIa chassis has been stripped to a bare chassis, with springs. I am installing the shackles, and shackle plates from the 109", along with it's axles next weekend.

Here's the starting points:

The 109" almost looks like it's the bigger (longer?) brother to Tom's 88. LOL!

Where I'm at as of now;

The red back-up 88" frame has been cut up for spare usable parts, mostly crossmembers, for my fabbing practice.
The 88" 1968 frame is stripped down bare, plus springs, to assess salvageability. There is a third 88" frame in Tampa I have, but need to still go get it, and bring it over.
The 109" has had it's axles removed and placed with the 88" frame.
The 109" has had empty 88" axle tubes placed underneath it, and has left for Washington State.

What I've got coming up this weekend:

Switch out all shackles on 88" frame to 109" shackles.
Install 109" axles in SOA configuration.
Put on wheels, and get rolling chassis out of my factory, before my company's owner has a kiniption. Put project back in my carport so I can take new measurements, and start to figure out pinion angles and axle placement.

Well; I held up on working on axles this weekend; as I was getting some more info on them from the UK, and from Bill at GBR. I went and purchased another SIIa frame that I found in Tampa, that was in far better condition than mine. And it cost me less than a new rear crossmember, with shipping from Rovers North. Also the one I found has better springs (for mock up only), and a plated rear crossmember. And outriggers for dual fuel tanks. I am putting a fuel cell in the bed, so won't need these, but will use them for attachment points when I build the rollcage. Steal at $350.00.
Also picked up a pickup cab top for the 88". Found a guy who has containers, and a warehouse of spares for SI through SIII rovers. Got a back piece in very good condition. A top in fair condition. Along with all new rubber seals and gaskets in brand new LRNA sealed bags. And brand new in the box from LRUK curved glass side windows. Only thing missing is the sliding rear window, and new window tracks for it. He even threw in the galvanised attachment piece that goes on the truck bed, that the top bolts down to. Bargain price of $250.00 for everything.

I think you may know him. He had a Rover shop in Tampa in the old days. Him and Bill Davis go way back. His name is Jim Cartier. Hell; he has SI trans and t-cases laying around. More parts than even I could want, lol.

BTW; would you happen to have a sliding rear window set, or the new window tracks for a pickup top laying around?

The window parts for the P/U top can be made from the sliding rear side windows of the Series SW. Even the glass locks etc are the same.I have fixed a couple this way (can't recall the particular details right now) as I have several pick up tops.

If you have a very good to perfect set of the slider frames, and/or seals for the rear window; I would like to purchase them. I can probably have a glass place cut perspex or impact resistant glass to fit; after I have the new frames installed.

If you need Jim Cartier's number; I would be happy to PM it to you.

Well; my surprise for everyone just got ruined. I just got an email back (after waiting over a week) from TomCat Motorsports. Their roll cage will not fit a series frame. Even though they have an 80", and an 88"; they are for shortened RR/DI chassis with coil suspensions. And the engineers there don't see any way of making it work with my leafer chassis.
So I guess no TomCat cage, and fiberglass wings/hood for my hybrid. So I am having the guy who does our gas tanks, t-tops, and radar arches quote me a cage, based on the TomCat design. Hopefully he can make something that will fit under the softtop, and have a removable section for the P/U cab to go on. If not, I will ditch the softtop and have him design one that goes exo-cage around the P/U cab.

I'd get the seals from RDS http://www.roversdownsouth.com/
and find an old side panel for the tracks. I'll look out in the junkyard but I'm pretty sure all the donor sides are gone and the sides I have left, although there are a pile of them, are all matched sets with roofs and etc.

The roll cage is difficult to make work inside the pickup top, if you want to be able to sit in there with it.

Buy a pipe bender. You can make the cage be the hoopset for the softtop. I'd be happy to build one for you but the shipping would be more than the pipebender would cost you.
