3.9 Steering/Alternator Belt Adjust
« on: September 22, 2008, 08:59:15 PM »
My CD Repair Manual has failed me in telling me how to adjust the alternator/steering pump belts- it, instead, cheerily asks me to play with the tensioner for the 4.0 serpentine belt.

Is it on a bracket like my dad's Series, or something more sinister? Or is my steering belt just dying? I can't take the shrieking any more in either case.

If that's not mud I don't know what is? Swampy, boggy, smelly, rutted, thick mud.

I got your mud right here. Florida mud that sinks RRC on UniMog Portals, running 39.5" IROKS, down to the frame.

My mechanic who works on my DII is the owner of the RRC on portals. He just brought it to the national rallye in Moab. It had enough flex to run the trails in Moab no problem, lol. That truck is really sick. The owner of the shop has the 101FC in some of those pics. It's running 39.5 Iroks, and a Nissan turbo-diesel.

I've never had to tension the belt, but I think you can do it with the alternator.  If your belt looks cracked at all, I'd just replace the belt.  I don't think it'd be too expensive.  If you replace it, it might be tighter than the belt you have now, and nothing may need to be tensioned.

Haven't done it myself though.  I will have to tackle it eventually though, as I think my PS Pump is dying.  Just not entirely sure how to determine if it is or if it's my box.

Yeahh, I'm leaning towards just replacing the belt that's there. The alternator belt is fine, tension wise, so I don't think I'd get much play with adjustment any how.

Jon; is it a double pulley set-up. One belt for the alternator, and one for the P.S. pump? If so; the bracket will be able to be loosened and swung out to tighten the play. Approximately 1-3 mm up and down travel when tightened. If any less, you will prematurely wear out the p.s. pulley bearings. Any more; it will shriek like a banshee at full lock.

Youll have to loosen the tensioner to replace the belt anyhow so then you'll figure out how it all works. While you are at it you might as well do all the belts as they all have to come off.

If you have the correct shop manual the proceess is very clearly described. Not sure which CD you have, the Rave editions are useless for RRC's (unless it's a '95 and then still pretty useless) the Classic Parts are a bit more usefull.....tha actual book...you know...those things with pages, are the shit you want.
