ok so I have an 89 RRC that i use as my trail truck.  I would like to register it but it doesn't seem reasonable. All it would need is and exhaust...and maybe some window motors.  I also have and early 89 classic that is in pieces, and an 81 classic that is also in pieces.  I would like to put a 200 or 300 tdi in the late 89.  what if I was to take the vin plate from the 81, hypathetically of course, and put in on the 89.  would my emissions issues be solved? and what do you think?  I have done diesel swaps before in series trucks, but not a classic.  there is plenty of room in the engine bay, so it seems like a good project.

In the UK, the 200TDi was offered stock, in the RRC, so a 200 swap should be easy. Just need the right bellhousing to connect everything up. So eBayUK is your friend on that one. A 300 is almost as easy as it is a popular swap over there. More reliable and better power as well. Remember that the 200 was a evolution of the NA 2.5 diesel in the first 90's which were offered military only. So the 200/300 series is well tested and sorted out. Go to http://www.lr4x4.com, a UK site, and everything you need to know will appear using the search button.

Good luck, just figure out how to get around the gov't issues.

Get a motor and tranny from a UK disco. 200 or 300 doesn't matter. It all bolts right in once you've fabbed the motor mounts. You do need the right tranny combo and they are available dirt cheap in the UK (well, the 200 is. The 300 is somewhat more expensive). The worst pain is finding the clutch pedal box....which isn't hard to solve but serves to illustrate the relative ease of the rest of the conversion. DON'T do an auto.

You will need a defender tranny, which is a little harder to source and a little more money, but if you are using a Defender front bodywork you can do this with the Disco manifolds.

Like Chris said, power loss.

Making the motor more powerfull (mine will spin all 4 on pavement if I have too) is not an issue but once done the auto box will need some very expensive mods.

I shouldn't say DON'T use an auto though as they are OK....just that a 5 speed is so much nicer.

hmm now my attention has been grabbed. On ebay uk it seems most are pick up only but there are some recondition for about 2 grand US and ones not reconditioned for about 1200 US dollars. Matt I am calling you today. Also Matt did Andy call you about the rack. He asked me for your phone number the other day. I went into great detail with him about how you are a good connection to have and how you would not be someone to piss off because of all the referrals you make.
