it was easier than twe thought.  4 bolts holding top dash down. we were able to just get in there and roll it out. all jons coolant let go a long tome ago from the core. it was as dry as a bone when we recovered it.  good father/son bonding day.

It may be that my 1989 Ranger Rover has a different A/C  & heater set-up than what you've mentioned here--but I'm about ready to get the hacksaw out and saw through the plastic that houses the A/C unit in order to get the heater core out.  It seems the bottom passenger side of the dash surrounds the entire A/C unit, and runs all the way to where the switches are for such things as the window heater, defrost, etc... thus blocking the direction I'd use to pull out the heater unit.  Everything is off--top dash, instrument cluster, console, I've even unbolted the unit.   Am I missing something?  I don't want to mess with the A/C on this, and right now it looks impossible unless I saw away.

Just go through this thread one step at a time, and be careful. Tom did a thoprough write up here, and this thread is very helpful.

No need to saw anything up. Your dash is the same as all the other US spec classics, as is the console.

Yes, thanks for the advice--last night I took a closer look at the unit and noticed I only needed to remove the one remaining nut on the far passenger side in order to ease the A/C out of the way, and then pulled out the heating  unit--no sawing.  Those steps were extremely helpful.

Thanks Again

Taking a walk away from it when it's bugging you can help in any project. Just need a fresh outlook on it. Rover ownership is stressful. Walking away, swearing, and kicking things usually helps. LOL!
