[Series] Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter - Install
« on: January 26, 2009, 07:28:35 PM »
OK, Just got the spin-on adapter mounted on the Series. I purchased the Rocky Mountain Adapter for $80 US. A nice surprise was that it came with the appropriate oil filter. Heres the How-To of the project.

1) Drain oil from pan and remove filter as if changing the oil.

2) Disconnect pressure sender switch wiring from old filter base and then remove the two bolts holding the oil filter base to the engine block! (Tap w/ a rbber mallet if hard sealed to block.)

3) Scrape away any of the old gasket and then clean off engine mounting surface. (Be sure to use a degreaser that does not leave risidue.)

4) Once the surface is cleaned, ready the adapter gasket with a light coat of sealant. Place gasket to surface of engine block.

5) Locate the open port on new adapter and install the oil pressure sender switch using the copper washer supplied. Do not over tighten.

IMPORTANT: PRESSURE SENDER SWITCH SHOULD BE UP AND FACING FAN !!!

6) Reusing the original 7/16" bolts and new washers supplied, slide into slots of adapter to begin mounting to block.  HINT: I found out after 10 minutes of fighting the bolts, start with the top bolt slightly started first, then the lower one.

7) With the gasket and adapter now properly in place, begin tightening the bolts. Alternate as you go so that the adapter will sit properly against the mounting surface. Be sure that bolts are tigtened firmly.

8) As if changing your oil, prepare the oil filter by putting a coat of oil on the filter gasket and thread and install as normal. Be sure the oil pan plug is in place and fill with oil.

9) With engine oil added, and engine running, check for any leaks. If any leaks are noticed, shut engine and retighten bolts holding the new adapter to the engine block.

Most Rover engines look like that and I've never heard of one burning up yet. I want to clean mine solely so I can see where it is leaking and fix it.
