The clearance issue will become even more apararent if you run coilovers (I think that's what you were planning eh Forrest?) as . although you loose the spring buckets you will have a longer spring that needs to go up past the frame with enough room between the spring and the frame to clear when that side of the axle drops (I hope you can visualise this) as the bottom of the coilover will need to move toward the center of the truck. In most coil over situations this can be the case and having a wider axle will be a geometric advantage.

If you're building a trayback you could make it a little wider. Flare the front. Build custom big tube front wings....yeah...

thanks for all the input guys, I had not thought about clearance on the frame.  my plan is to run coil-overs too so that makes it an even bigger problem.  I have been planning tub front fenders anyway so it seems like i could make them a bit wider.  My main concern before was being able to find a toyota wheel that would not have to much backspacing if i ran the 80's, but if the narrower axle is going to cause suspension problems then its not an option.  the fj80 axles have a large ring gear in the front as well as the back and I hope they will be cheaper than the fzj80 axles with the 8' front ring gear and e-locker.  thanks again for the advice.
