Then removed the plastic rocker sills to see how much clearance they were actually hiding. Result; 2 1/2 ".

Finished fitting the rear end pieces to get the final look. Now to tack weld them in place, and start on the bobtail.

Those jumps seats are gonna be the best seat in the house on good weather days!!!  I think you should do a soft top for the rear section that would be pretty cool looking or at least a bikini top 45ed from the roof to the rear.

Andy; The jump seats are coming out to allow for the bobtail. I just needed to get one good "series" style pic before I pulled them. I am trying to get at least six inches per side with the bobtail, maybe more. Depends on how much I can bend in the rear quarters without completely cracking the paint, or distresasing the metal.

Thanks, Don. Can't wait to hear your comments when I start "bobbing" the rear end. Want to take at least a foot off of the width. Will be putting the fuel cell in the back either behind the rear seat, or replacing the rear seat, and then use the rear doors for tool storage access. Still figuring that part out.

I got the idea from Lane's DI truggy on Pirate. And when I was able to find a rolling chassis DI for 200.00; I had to just give it a go. Now I can put less wear and tear on  the DII.

When I started chopping up my 96 I almost stopped and made it a buggy, it was sooo tempting.  Had I gone to Winter Romp before I started to tear down I would definitely have done it.  Very cool project.  Once all the glass, sheet, insulation and various other crap is gone the body becomes very light.  Something to consider your rear is gonna be like a pick up with no weight other than the tank maybe at least a battery relocation to help a little.

Good Idea. I'm thinking a diesel engine, so more space in the engine bay is a good and welcome idea.

200 or 300 TDi, probably. When I get that far; there will be a lot of long talks with Matt Browne. Maybe even Nissan or Isuzu, or Iveco. Not 100% sure yet. This will be a budget build, since it's Rover #4 in the stable.
