Reporting In From Winter Romp 2009
« on: February 15, 2009, 08:21:49 AM »
Hello everyone. Our small delegation found Winter Romp so far pretty damn awesome! The weather so far has been perfect. The terrain well packed and plenty of trails are open.
Boot-It, Great Divide, Rover Babe, Mud Bug, and other familiars ventured out with the more extreme groups, as Priestly, LandRoverGeek, myself and others stayed more with the trail riding group.
We have picked up some new members as well. Welcome Packets on board made it a quick deal. PMD is now an OFFICIAL MEMBER!  As well as WhatRoad who reports sending in his check but had to leave ROMP as he suffered some fluid leakage and was home yesterday making repairs.  We also have our first LIFE MEMBER. Mr. Jeff Aronson of Rovers North News.
We were able to check out his well documented "QE1" Series Land Rover, and present him with his very own WELCOME PACKET which he gracefully accepted as the camera snapped the photo. (Now Jeff, you gotta mention the club every now and then in the magazine)
I took a nasty fall on the slick ice yesterday and was fine.... but today, I'm sore! Let's see how it goes. A ton of great looking rovers, new and old. Have some photos and video. Will post a few shots from Saturday and the rest later on.    Having fun and wish you were all able to attend!    Tom

A big thank you to the SNHLR's for your generosity at the Maine Winter Romp. I was delighted to receive a membership from Tom Lynch and pleased to meet so many enthusiasts from New Hampshire.

The event featured some 75 vehicles and well over 120 enthusiasts, some veteran participants and some new to off roading. The weather was perfect for comfort - 20's and sunny in the woods and fields all day - but the dry, windy weather also dessicated the snow. Underneath the crust lay soft powder that provided no traction. And underneath all that soft stuff - ice.

Some trails run in past years were not available this year because of logging activity in the woods, but the large groups tackled the remaining variety of trails and conditions with gusto. One very entertaining challenge was a cleared hill with an "S" curve path upwards around some power line poles - great fun to ascend, descend and watch!

Equally entertaining were the evening gatherings at bars and restaurants in nearby Waterville. Some participants shared rooms at a Holiday Inn, some crashed at organizer Bruce Fowler's house, and some hardy souls camped in the woods on Bruce's land. Everyone gathered at a spectacular restaurant, Big G's, for huge breakfasts - even the staff wore Winter Romp T-shirts in honor of the weekend.

Great to meet everyone present from SHLR and thanks again for having me join you as a club member.

Had a geat time as usual. I think that is year 15 for us. Seems like part of life now.....every year is different and they are all the best.

Spent a good part of every day breaking trail. Did the first actual event runs on some of the trails that we have built in years past (in the fall) but have never got to do them due to conditions.

Nice to see such a good group of Rover nut jobs.
