SSPoN Confirmations...
« on: March 07, 2009, 02:20:29 PM »
There is a lot of interest in the trip this summer, so I am writing to ask folks to confirm there intentions of coming. It is WAY hard to keep track of that in a forum, so I am asking people who are still planning on being there to PM me. In those PMs it would be a good idea to let me know if you need the route to travel towards you. I know many people have the plan of joining us for a few days to a week, or dropping in and out. If you are one of those people we want to do the best we can to route the trip towards you. I can not promise that I can accommodate all requests, but if it is convenient then I will do so. Also, we are still looking for suggested stops.

Also, if there are any more suggestions for SSPON destinations let me know as I am going to try to nail it all down in the next few weeks.

Thanks everyone!!!

We did, to some degree, but let me use you for an example. "I'm in for one day" is not enough information for me to make plans. What day? Where are you? Where would you like to join us? Do you have some suggestions for where you would like to go? So far I have very little information in what people want, just a bunch of people saying they want to participate. I am now moving towards the planing of campgrounds, motels, places of interest where we need to have head counts, etc...

So, what I am looking for is for each person who intends to come, to PM me with their information. This is what I would like:

Real Name
SNHLR Name
Number of People In your Party
Children? If so, ages?
How long will you be with us?
Where would you like to join us?
Are there are any destinations you have an interest in?

The problem is, we set a cap at 15 trucks, but there are about people saying they want to come. I need to confirm people, counts etc... so I can figure out how to handle this. I have been thinking about breaking us into two or three groups. With 21 trucks we could have three teams of 7 trucks each. These are the things that I am thinking, but if half the people are not coming, then that makes my life easier. Long story short: I'm looking to deal with the logistics and will turn that into actual idea of what things cost... and then I bet a bunch of people will drop out.

David,

Your orginal idea for this event is very ambitious.  I can tell you that organizing even a weekend club run can be a very challenging and time consuming, and thats with people who are committed members of an organized club.  Events that go past a simple weekend take a team of people a lot of time and effort to put together.  As an example, and not to pick on their effort at all, look at the ExploringNH trans NH Expedition last year.  The original plan was way too ambitious in retrospect and they ended up mostly doing a road trip.  I am sure they learned a lot and will come back with a better result this year.

With just you putting the effort forward on this I will respectfully say that I fear you have bitten off a lot to chew with a 2 week event.  While I think your cross country trip in your series was incredibly cool, I don't to the best of my knowledge think that you have a sufficient "inventory" of trail knowledge in VT to fill anywhere near that time.  Nor do I think that having people pop in and out of a rag tag caravan for 2 weeks would really work logistically.  I am not suggesting you give up on it, rather that you scale it back to maybe an extended weekend event where you can pick a date well ahead and make it easier for people to commit to it.  Very few people can commit 2 weeks to a single vacation that may or may not be their familes idea of fun, especially in a tough economic climate such as this.  I applaud your effort to put together a fun event for other enthusiasts and am merely offering some suggestions that perhaps could make the planning and success of it easier for you to achieve.

Kevin,

I appreciate your sentiments, however we are going to go ahead with the two week plan. The main reason for this is simple: Allison and I are doing it no matter what. Then, when we mentioned it to Brandt he said he and his wife are all in. I put the idea out there and so many people expressed interest that the truck count shot up to 20. I figure most of those people will not commit, but hope to end up with 5 - 10 trucks.

Anyway, you are correct that I do not have extensive knowledge of NH and VT trails, but that is why I reached out and asked for people interested in planning to get on board. I have great response on that front and am preparing for a meeting of the minds planning session. The other thing you will note is that I have not said very much about trail riding/wheeling. There are two reasons for this: the first, you have already identified - that I don't know that many trails; and the second is that the point of this expedition is less about that and more about the traveling. We have identified two ghost towns that require four wheel drive to access; the Land Rover Driving School in Manchester; Harpoon Brewery; and other locations as stopping points. The Muddy Chef Cook Off is being planned to take up one of the weekends and we will route towards that so I can win. (Hahah) Remember, even those four events will require eight days to tackle because of driving time between them. Anyway, the planning continues.

I will say that I am disappointed in the disappearance of the SNHLR folks as I have received very few confirmations in response to this post. Over at Muddy Oval there is still plenty of interest and our truck count is still up around 15.

Obviously, this is not going to be a MAR level, uber-planned event. We got destinations, and more are being planned; we're going to camp, drink beer and cook food; we'll go to ghost towns; we want kids to come along; we'll camp. In the end, it'll just be plain fun.

Sure did Tom, but you're the only one from SNHLR to confirm. I'm not sure what happened to the others that said they were interested.

Good for you then David.  VT really does have a lot to offer especially with the time you have to really explore and take your time.
