Expedition Cases
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:27:20 PM »
I don't know how many of you are expedition-minded, but I came across some military protective cases in GREAT SHAPE the other day.  These are great for vehicle-dependent expedition use.  They come in a variety of sizes--I actually wrote down the sizes on a piece of scrap paper, but forgot about it and tossed the scrap paper later on the day.  I'll re-measure.

These cases have interlocking block-type tops and bottoms, allowing them to be rigidly stacked like legos.

Each case has easily-removable foam padding with cutouts for whatever used to be stored inside.  The only fault I see with any of these cases is that most are missing the pressure-relief valve (see photos below).

These cases are being sold for only $55 each regardless of size.  Ordinarily I'd put this out on the nationwide forums, but I don't want to go through the hassle of shipping these cases.  I can bring deliver them to any club event I attend or they can be picked up in Manchester, NH.

Anyone interested, just e-mail me at: SafeAirOne (at) myfairpoint (dot) net or PM me and I'll go down and pick one up for you.

Man, those are sweet. I'd be interested in a couple, if you can get the measurements again.
2002 LR DII SE Kalahari Edition. 4.6, locking CDL, and Detroits.
1994 LR RRC LWB. EAS conversion w/ +2" springs.
1968 LR SIIA 88" Hybrid, with 109" 1 ton axles SOA. Needs Tartis for completion.

1979 LR SIII 5 door 109 SW, 11 seater. Sold, 09'.
1997 Disco I Bobtailed buggy conversion. Sold, 11'.

OK--Here are the measurements. There are quite a few less available today than when I took the pics on Sunday--looks like they're getting bought up by people like me. There are 2 more that aren't listed--I was in a rush this morning and lost track of which ones I measured and which ones I didn't. NONE of these have the pressure relief valve, so you'll need to plug the hole to make them fully waterproof/airtight.

Here's the ones I know for sure: All measurements in inches (obviously):

25 x 25 x 13---2 avail

33 1/2 x 29 x 13---3 avail

33 1/2 x 29 x 15

24 1/2 x 33 x 13

25 x 29 1/2 x 20

25 x 29 x 16 1/2

25 x 29 x 13---2 avail

37 x 33 x 17---2 avail

37 x 33 x 21

EDIT:  The width of the floor in the back of my 109 36"

I was getting nervous because of how quickly these were selling, so I went down and bought 2 of the 29x25x13's. I intended to pass these along to anyone who wanted one, since I can't afford them anymore (the Seacoast drive last Sunday ended up costing me $220), but I REALLY grew fond of the cases on the drive back to the house....

The store is selling these like hotcakes. There were even less available when I got these. There ARE still 4 of the 33x30x13's that would fit nicely between the wheelwells in the rear tub of a Series Rover (and probably Defender). Here are photos of the slightly less wide (29") cases I bought sitting in the back of my 109 (I have 43" between the dog cage and the rear door):

Kevin--I don't have any except the 2 I bought, and I've become rather attached to those. The electronic surplus store where I got them might or might not have any left on Friday. If you want to commit to buying some, tell me what size(s), and I'll use my own money to get them before Friday, but I'll need to get reimbursed fairly quickly as I don't really have huge wodges of cash lying around and have a mortgage payment coming due soon, kids need to eat, electric bill due, etc... Strictly on the honor system.

Ben, I can check. They probably still have the 37x33x21. I think there was only one of those; It's the largest container they have out there. What if they do still have it?

Those are sick.  If i weren't in Europe right now I would absolutely get a few.

What's the deal with their origins... military surplus store or something?

I guess I'll just pick up some Pelicans when I get home this summer.

Yeah--they must be military surplus, though I picked mine up at the local electronic surplus place (these cases used to house some kind of electronic or test equipment), though you can purchase them from dealers too.

I went to the manufacturer's website ( http://transitcases.com/loadmaster.html ) and hit the GSA Superstore link (where the US Govt buys their off-the shelf stuff and sells it to the different agencies);  The Government pays $465 for each case that I just paid $55 each for, and mine are in GREAT, almost like-new shape.  A call to the regional distributor of these cases got me a replacement pressure relief valve at no charge (most of these are missing the pressure relief valves).

These cases are GREAT expedition storage cases and are MUCH better than the cases they used when I was in the Marines only 10 years ago.

Nope--I stopped by a few weeks ago and they're all gone.
