New axles
« on: May 05, 2009, 07:45:56 PM »
So I just spoke with a guy in my town he has a front dana 70 hd with 4:56 gears and warn premium hubs.  he also had a full float dana 60 hd rear with 4:10's.  I am going to pick them both up for $600 it seems like a good price and I won;t be done with my portals in time for wheeling so I needed something strong.  I will re-gear the rear to match the front and lincoln lock it.  Don what do you think.  they are full width axles 72 wms to wms.  I will leave them full width for now.  the truck doesnt see high speeds so I am not worried about the centered rear diff.  when I do cut them down I will just cut one side of the rear to offset it.

Sounds like a hell of agood deal!!! And youll never break them till you have a 6-7 hundred hp motor in front....even then youll be hard pressed to break they in the woods.

thats what I figured, I don't mind having the weight down low, and they will be nearly unbreakable with the rover v8 pushing them.  the front has had some work do to it too, it has been converted to the 35 spline from the stock 21 spline, which is why the new warn hubs are there.

Clifton; are you sure that info is right? Wouldn't it be a 60 front, and a 70 rear, not the other way around? Make sure you're front is passenger side drop for the third, or you'll hate trying to fit it. The rear can be centered and still work, but the front is the important one.

Sweet. That will make a nice rig. Maybe sell or trade the D60 rear, for a D70; and have 70/70. You'd be bullet-proof at that point.

I can't imagine that I would break a 60 HD rear with 37's on a trayback defender, but yes that would be sweet

That will be nice for around 34-35" tires. Is this going to be a seperate project from your portal box project?

yeah the portals are going to take so long that I needed something to fill the gap.  I will be running 37-38's, but I have an LT95 with a (what I believe to be) a lower 1st gear.

For that size tire; I'd be looking for a 4.70-4.75 in the ring and pinions.

right now I have a rear 4.10 and a front 4.56, I am re gearing the rear to match the front because it is lower.  I am not going to be running these things forever, so I don' want to spend the money on 2 new sets of gears.  I would like to find 5.13 or 5.29's but who has those ratios for a dana 70, I have seen them jump to 6.... something which is way too low. so for now i deal with it. I figure I will still have a lower ratio than an 88 because of the lt95 and so it should be fine the truck has a strong v8 and is light.

make an offer for the 4.10, or find me a used 4.56 set for the dana 60
